As part of the British government backed penal colony programme, many petty criminals are shipped to and imprisoned in Australia. Conditions are dire, and the convicts have nowhere to escape to. Treated like animals by those in charge of their welfare, and violently flogged for stealing so much as a biscuit, there seems to be little hope.
