A frippery frittering play! Major Robbie Ross
1789. As part of the British government backed penal colony programme, many petty criminals are shipped to and imprisoned in Australia. Conditions are dire, and the convicts have nowhere to escape to. Treated like animals by those in charge of their welfare, and violently flogged for stealing so much as a biscuit, there seems to be little hope.
But, Governor Arthur Phillip, the Naval Officer in charge of the Colony, believes that the convicts deserve a chance. He gives his permission for Ralph Clark, a young Second Lieutenant, to direct a play. However, conditions are far from ideal. Clark has a cast of convicts, a leading lady who may be about to be hanged, and superior officers who want to see the play fail. If he is to succeed, his cast must learn to work together and trust each other.
Our Country’s Good is a powerful play that, amongst many other themes, examines the redemptive power of theatre. With beautiful technical effects and rich, poignant language, this production will get you laughing, crying and thinking...
