Henry IV
UCLU Drama Society in association with UCLU Stage Crew society present an amateur production of of Pirandello’s Henry IV in a new adaptation by Tom Stoppard.
An Italian nobleman falls from his horse during an eleventh century pageant. When he regains consciousness he believes he is the medieval Emperor, King Henry IV. Encouraged in this belief by those around him, he plays out his illusion to perfection. Is this madness or a lifelong self-observing performance? Where does one draw the line between illusion and reality when the mask has moulded the face? For twenty years he has been humoured in his belief but today a plot is being devised to shock him out of his madness and into the twenty first century.
Maintaining the simplicity of Pirandello’s dramatic line, Stoppard brings a new energy and linguistic wit to this masterpiece.
