Waldemar Bastos and Nogabe
Presented by The London African Music Festival.
Waldemar Bastos is the great voice of Portuguese Africa. A national hero in Angola, he went to Brazil, working closely with Djavan and Chico Buarqu, and then made his mark across the world recording for David Byrne's label Luaka Bop in what he calls his "Afropean" style. He takes influences from many cultures and makes them his own resulting in music of immense power.
Waldemar Bastos leads a true all African star band featuring Congolese guitarist Dizzy Mandjeku Lengo, Mozambiquean drummer Elias Kacomanolis, Ghanian bassist Bibi Hammond and dazzling Congolese congo player Mafwala Komba. Expect a grand and spectacular performance.
Opening the concert is the fabulously agile Malagasy guitarist Nogabe Randriaharimalala whose sun drenched rhythms evoke the spirit of the Indian Ocean island known as the 'eight continent'. His guitar playing is spotless, his bell-clear tone is matched by a dazzling agility and liquidity that is uniquely his. Nogabe doesn't feel the weight of protecting Malagasy music from outside influence and his travels across the world has infused his music with openness that is universal. Nogabe Randriaharimalala sees the world as one big continent
