Assassins at the Bridewell
From one of the producers behind Barbara Cook's most recent UK engagement, Happily Ever After, comes Sondheim and Weidman's most interesting and engaging musical, Assassins, and brings Sondheim's work back to its London home, the Bridewell Theatre.
Assassins at the Bridewell will be the London premier of Sondheim and Weidman's revised script and score, adapted for the Broadway revival in 2004. This multi award winning musical, explores an American where some can grow up to be a president, while others are left in the shadows, their fates destined toward murderous intentions. A twisted celebration of what it means to be an American citizen, Assassins brings to life the nine people who have attempted to assassinate American presidents, from Lincoln to Reagan, and asks what was it that made them believe murder was the only option to settle a variety of obscure motives.
Colin Nash's new production evokes a vaudeville feel, and examines the right to own a gun as both a tool of empowerment and impotence.
Through Sondheim's funny lyrics and evocative score, and John Weidman's rip roaringly funny book, Assassins exposes a sinister underside to the American Dream and challenges our perceptions of 'murder in mind'. Assassins has to be one of the most controversial musicals ever written, and never more so topical!
