Edinburgh Previews - James Loveridge, Kai Samra, Alex Smith, Annie McGrath
Despite the world being on the brink of collapse, it’s fair to say James is the happiest he's ever been. He's just got engaged, his relationship with his cat has improved (subject to change), now all he has to do is not f*ck it up!
Nominated Best Show Edinburgh Fringe, 2016 Amused Moose
Undoubtedly the best free show that I have seen at the Fringe BroadwayBaby.com
Animated and confident, with a fine sense of timing Steve Bennett, Chortle.co.uk
Kai Samra has quickly risen to become one of the most exciting acts on the circuit today. Combining an edgy stage presence and a confident delivery, he talks frankly about issues such as class, race and modern culture from an intelligent and fresh perspective.
Within his first nine months he won the Up the Creek Blackout Competition three times, was a Finalist in the Bath Comedy Festival New Act Competition and a Semi Finalist in the Amused Moose Laugh Off 2017. He has recently opened for Paul Chowdhry at Watford Colosseum Arena in front of 2000 people, performed a sold out showcase at Soho Theatre as part of the Soho Young Company, gigged professionally with people like Sara Pascoe, Nish Kumar, Dane Baptiste and now gigs regularly at Top Secret Comedy, Up the Creek and Angel Comedy club.
A unique voice in the comedy industry he is unafraid to tackle lazy stereotypes perpetuated by comedy. This has led him interviewed live in studio at the BBC Asian Network and also to be featured on BBC Radio 4.
Alex Smith’s trademark mix of laser sharp stand-up observations and cleverly crafted comedy songs have helped him rapidly emerge as one the most exciting new acts on the circuit.
He has performed all over the world including at the Johannesburg International Comedy Festival. On TV, Alex was most recently a guest on The Chris Ramsey Show for Comedy Central, and wrote and performed the new appeal advert for the NHS Organ Donation Appeal.
He has also appeared on BBC Radio 2’s New Comedy Awards and secured two guest slots on BBC3’s prestigious talent showcase, Live At The Electric hosted by Russell Kane, whom he supported during his ‘Smallness’ tour.
Alex was runner up in The Amused Moose 2013 Laugh Off competition and appeared as part of The Comedy Zone at Edinburgh 2014. He was also a finalist at the Montreux Comedy Festival in Switzerland. He has written for Huffington Post, You & Your Wedding and is currently writing for Rock n Roll Bride.
Annie McGrath is a comedy writer and performer who has written and appeared on ITV2’s @elevenish, as well as Channel 4 online’s show Girls Go Trolling. Annie has featured on BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio 4 Extra and has been shortlisted for the Funny Women award. She is also a two-time finalist for the Tickled Pig stand-up competition and has performed at clubs and theatres nationwide, as well as festivals including Latitude, Cornbury and Machynlleth Comedy Festival.
Aside from solo stand-up, Annie writes and performs as one half of the double-act Twins with Jack Barry (“Two razor-sharp comedy minds” – EdFringe Review). Their 2015 Edinburgh Fringe show Twins: Pret A Comedy at the Pleasance Courtyard was produced in association with Hat Trick Productions to great critical acclaim. Described as “genuinely impressive… and ridiculously funny” (The Edinburgh Reporter), the show was also selected as one of multiple Edinburgh comedy award nominee James Acaster’s Top Picks of the Fringe for The Guardian and one of Laugh Out London’s Top Sketch Shows. Twins have filmed the show with Turtle Canyon Comedy for a new online platform called NextUp, launching soon.
Annie took her debut stand-up show to the Edinburgh fringe last year, where she was awarded one of Dave’s Top Ten Funniest Jokes of the Fringe 2016. She returned in 2017 with her follow up show ‘Ambivert’.
Annie founded the University of Leeds’ Comedy Society and was part of the university’s sketch group The Leeds Tealights for three years as a performer, writer and producer. She was a member of the 2010 Tealights cast that won the National Student’s Best Student Sketch Group award. Annie has also written features for Marie Claire and ASOS.
